3 Dog Training Mistakes When Adding an Additional Dog

Bringing home a second (or third, or forth, etc.) dog may not be as easy as it sounds. Here are 3 mistakes commonly made when adding another dog to the family:

1. You decide to bring home a new dog because you think your current dog wants a friend.
   • Bringing home any dog, but especially an additional dog, should always be a decision made strictly by the human(s) and what the human(s) want to commit to – unless your first dog is going to potty train it, and stop it from chewing on the furniture!
2. Assuming your dog will love a new puppy or dog because they get along with other dogs.
   • It is normal for older dogs not to like puppies! And just because your dog loves all the other dogs in the neighborhood, does not mean they will be thrilled about one moving into their space.
3. Not having one-on-one time with both or all dogs.
   • Dog training is dependent on your relationship with the dog. Having one-on-one time with each dog is crucial to success in the family and especially dog training!
